Our Story
It is my passion to feed my family healthy and nutritious food. My husband, Chris, and I are on a journey to understand God's design for food and how it benefits our bodies and our communities. This feels like an insurmountable challenge in a society where an industry desires to make the most, the cheapest and deplete nutrition to do so. We live in a culture that is ignorant of where our food comes from, how it is produced, what it is in it and, therefore, its impact on us and those we love.
I am inclined to do the work and research involved in preparing and understanding whole and health promoting foods to fulfill what God instructs us to do in His Word. 1 Corinthians 6:19 and 20 says that we are the temple where the Holy Spirit resides. We are to honor Him with our bodies. Therefore, it is the desire of my heart to please the Lord with what we take into our bodies.
We were introduced to the benefits of whole grains in 2007. After learning the amazing advantages, we chose to change that one part of our diet completely. We purchased a grain mill, the Nutrimill, to grind grain into flour that has all the parts of the wheat kernel. In order to make our own bread and baked goods in a quantity that made it worthwhile, we also purchased a Bosch Universal Plus. At that time, we had 2 toddlers, and I was caring for my mother who had a debilitating stroke at age 51, so I did not bake as much as I wanted. It was a huge treat for my family when I did. But now, as seasons have changed, I am able to bake so that we do not have to buy commercial bread or flour, and can enjoy 100% nutritious and delicious whole grain bread from my own kitchen.
When I share my bread with friends and family, it becomes not only a conversation of how, but why I bake this way. That means I tell the benefit of whole grains and how God has designed them to nourish our bodies. Since this is a journey, we have continued to learn and move our family along the nutritional continuum, adopting more and more health-promoting foods and preparation techniques into our lives.
Hippocrates once said, "Let food be thy medicine." We have found this to be so very true and that, as Dr. Mark Hyman of the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Functional Medicine has shared, food is one of the most powerful drugs - with the ability to do either much good or much harm. I am excited to share what we have come to know with others! With that in mind, and after much prayer and consideration, we started Bread by Design, LLC in order to help educate about the importance and nutrition of clean, real food including whole grains, whole foods, fermented foods and beverages, a healthy approach to food, and provide supplies that make it easy and attainable to serve health promoting foods in the home, and to offer them in a manner that is both convenient, affordable and yummy.
